Dr. Chris Lockwood is widely regarded as one of the foremost experts and innovators in sports and physique-augmenting nutrition. Dr. Lockwood earned his Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology and his M.S. in Exercise & Sports Science. He has authored, co-authored, and peer reviewed over 30 research manuscripts detailing the physiological effects of nutritional, dietary supplement and/or training interventions and their respective or combined effects on human metabolism, endocrine function, body composition, human performance, and health. Most notably, Dr. Lockwood is a sought after expert on protein and protein hydrolysate supplementation, and their respective physiological effects within humans.
Dr. Lockwood has also authored and co-authored three book/textbook chapters—Creatine (Sports Supplement Encyclopedia, 1st Edition, 2001), An Overview of Sports Supplements (Essentials of Sports Nutrition and Supplements, 2008), and Nutritional Ergogenic Aids (Nutritional Concerns in Recreation, Exercise, and Sport, 2009)—and several hundred consumer magazine articles and columns. He served as Editor-in-Chief of Muscle & Fitness and Muscle & Fitness Hers while still a full-time graduate research assistant/student and nutrition professor at the University of Oklahoma (U.S.).
Dr. Lockwood's vast and unique industry experience also includes formerly serving as the senior category director of the more than $260 million Diet, Energy, Food, and Beverage category for General Nutrition Centers (GNC), senior brand manager of ABB/Science Foods (formerly owned by Weider Nutrition International), and vice president of research & business development for the brand and business development consulting firm Gerstner & Associates; he has also formulated and co- formulated over 100 sports nutrition and related dietary supplements. He is the patent inventor on a protein agglomeration process (US#20040071825), an Honorary Founding Member and former vice president of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN), a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), and a member of the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA). He also co-developed the NSCA's first Nationally Accredited Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) exam by serving an appointed position on its Certification Commission Job Analysis Committee.
Dr. Lockwood currently serves as CEO of Applied Physiology Nutrition, LLC, a research and discovery and executive business consulting firm specific to companies that supply to, or compete within, the dietary supplement, sports nutrition, and natural products industries. His clients include ingredient developers and suppliers, university research labs, Bodybuilding.com (as a contributing editor and spokesperson), consumer brands in need of quality assurance, analytical, R&D, branding and/or legal compliance support, as well as celebrities in need of professional diet and supplement counseling. For example, Dr. Lockwood recently worked with Matthew McConaughey and Grammy award winning artist Ciara Harris, to help each get in peak condition for their respective projects (the movie ‘Magic Mike’, for Matthew; a new album, for Ciara). Dr. Lockwood also serves as a co-investigator on three research trials currently underway. One study is a dose-response assessment of a novel agent reported to stimulate blood flow; another (study) is a metabolomics assessment of a novel whey protein hydrolysate versus its native whey form; and lastly he is collaborating on a clinical trial investigating the impact of a novel whey protein hydrolysate or resistance training in older male patients undergoing androgen depletion therapy for prostate cancer.
